School & Building Information

Longfellow Liberal Arts is located at 4198 7th Avenue in Rock Island.

The school is situated on a main thoroughfare among one and two family residences in the KeyStone Neighborhood. 

Longfellow serves kindergarten through sixth grade levels and has a Head Start program.There is one classroom for kindergarten and first grades, and one multi-age kindergarten/first grade classroom. For all other grade levels, there is one classroom.

Longfellow Liberal Arts is a Leader in Me school and also has a unique partnership with Augustana College. 

Daily Schedule
Start: 8:30 a.m.
Dismissal: 3:00 p.m.

Wednesday Dismissal: 2:10 p.m.
Half Day Dismissal: 11:45 a.m.


The Rock Island-Milan School District operates on a modified year-round calendar.  School starts in early August, and students have 2-week breaks in the fall, winter, and spring.


According to the Illinois State Report Card, in 2016 there were 350 students enrolled at Longfellow. The average class size was 20. 


Hot Breakfast/Lunch Programs

A hot breakfast and lunch are provided to Longfellow students at no cost.

Students bringing a sack lunch may purchase milk for $.40

Recent and Planned Upgrades

Longfellow School has improved the playground, upgraded the gymnasium, installed air conditioners and ceiling fans, laid new carpet, and had new toilets and sinks installed. This past year, Longfellow received approximately 10,000 square feet in additional space as part of the Building Excellence plan:

Parent Involvement and Opportunities

Longfellow parents are welcomed and encouraged to get involved directly with the school. Most commonly, the parents help out in the classrooms, as well as Open House, Fall Festival, Feliz Navidad, Ice Cream Social, Tutoring, Booster Club, Field Trip Chaperones, and by supervising at dances.


Safety, Parking, Crossing Guards

All students being dropped off and picked up must exit with a staff member in the designated area.  There are child and adult crossing guards as well as on-site parking for parents.

Playground Time & Supervision

There is playground time scheduled before school, during lunch, and periodically with each teacher in the primary grades. During these times parents, aides, teachers, and the principal supervise the children at play.
